Call Me if You Need Rest

July 19, 2015
Mark 6: 30-34

2.       I’M THE CHOSEN ONE:

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!

MOVIE:
THE BREAK-UP PLAYLIST

CAST:
When I saw the trailer, ang naging impression ko ay: “uy, hindi ka na lugi sa aktingan”. We all know that Sarah Geronimo and Piolo Pascual already earned their names in the industry when it comes to acting given of course, the evidences of their successful movies in the previous years. As for Antonette Jadaone, she did not disappoint me with her “English Only Please” and “Beauty in a Bottle” plus the fact that she is paired once more with Direk Dan Villegas. I know that with these beautiful minds and faces, the movie is blast. The only question is how the story will unfold?

STORY:
It’s about Trixie David (Geronimo), a law student whose heart is really into music and Gino Avila (Pascual), a rock band artist struggling to create a name of his own in the OPM world. Together, they put up a band and eventually fell in love with each other. Issues arose from Gino’s insecurity and jealousy towards Trixie when she turned-out to be more appreciated and favored than him.
I like the way how the movie highlighted various OPM artists. It reflects that the industry is still alive and kicking unlike the common belief that seldom to nobody’s listening to it anymore. Filipino Music is quite overshadowed by foreign ones but it’s definitely NOT dead. The viewers are surely inspired to listen more to OPM.
TBUP opened my eyes on the hardships and problems of band members making their way through the lime light and struggling for their message to be heard through their songs. I realized that unlike teaching, my job, though not lucrative…it’s not a stable one.
The getting-to-know scene in the record bar made me giggle and I think, people are really creative when they’re in love.
On the other hand, I’m a little disappointed on how the characters swirl the story all the way to the climax particularly on the part when Gino is regretting that he broke-up with Trixie and is trying to win her back by saying that he already changed his ways. That scene should be more convincing by showing evidences of metanoia. On the part of Trixie, her acceptance, healing and forgiveness are somewhat superficial. We all know that being fully healed takes a lot of time although the culprit was already confronted and the pain addressed. The moving-on part of the leading lady is “KULANG SA BABAD” and I think that needs stress.

OVERALL:
THREE STARS (***)…Satisfied with the acting, a little disappointed with the story.
